A quick editorial cartoon about the intersection of self-pity, entitlement, rape, territoriality, misogyny and fear of women. You see it all over the place online in the form of Men’s Rights Activists (of whom there are a few reasonable non-misogynists), Men Going Their Own Way, Pick Up Artists, and dudes touting the “Red Pill”, because The Matrix is a good movie. Look any of these up if you have the stomach for it. These are extreme examples, but watered-down forms of these ideas are everywhere.

In lurking their blogs and youtube channels for a while, I’ve noticed that beyond the standard patriarchal chauvinism there is this deep fear of women - what they will do to me, how they will reject me, how they will use me, how they are changing society in a way that does not favor me, how they are making men into something I don’t like, how they are making themselves into something I don’t like, that they won’t give me what I want, and that they won’t give me what I think is rightfully mine. This goes beyond fear of feminism- this is fear of women at its purest. And that, to quote a puppet, leads to anger and hate. It’s sad.

I am a feminist. I think there’s enough ice cream to go around, but it does mean those of us with 3 scoops might have to give one or two up. Also, The Matrix is a fun movie but probably not anything you should be basing a philosophy on.

Is Community a Postmodern Masterpiece?

Here’s an idea: Community is a postmodern masterpiece. Though the TV show Community has never achieved huge ratings, it has a passionate cult following, including us here at Idea Channel. The show plays with genre and narrative in such a creative way that it brings to mind the cultural and artistic theory of Postmodernism. Previous TV series have been self-referential and culturally reflective, but none so successfully as Community. The show flips traditional expectations so consistently that it questions their importance in the first place. And it has brought the word “meta” into the cultural vernacular, to boot.

Some background info for anyone interested: 

RGB XYZ was my first short film. I started it back in 2004 and finished it in 2007 between other stuff. I released parts of it online under the (stupid) name Chuck C. Clint III. A few people might remember that Cartoon Brew covered it back then. A friend entered it to the Berlin Film Festival on my behalf so I took it offline as per the rules. It premiered there in 2008 and won a special mention. This was the first time I had a film in a festival and my mind was blown. Most festivals rejected it but it went on to win around 5 other awards.

Even though parts (all) of this are hard to watch, it was a huge learning experience for me. I established a lot of things that I developed later on, like realtime rendering, mixing ortho & perspective, playing with subtitles, and more broadly trying to bring emotion out of as few polygons as possible. There was an extremely short-run home made DVD of it which is out in the wild.
